Sewing Inset Circles
For my current project, the quilt top will be pieced using inset circles. In this video, I demonstrate how I use quarter circle templates to prepare fabric and sew an inset circle (including the difference between right- and left-hand cutting).

Cutting Convex Shapes Efficiently & From Directional Fabric

I'm making a new baby size version of my Garden Peony quilt, and one of the fabrics is a directional print. In this video, I'm demonstration how to both cut convex shapes the most efficiently from any width of fabric strip AND how I was able to get an even number of convex shapes in each of the four orientations so that I could keep the directional fabric "right way up" in the piecing of the qu...

Burying Thread Tails
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.Год назад
Today I'm excited to share a video demonstrating one of the most requested technique tutorials that I receive: how to bury thread tails in a quilt sandwich. I personally sew and quilt predominantly with Aurifil 50wt thread, but I do love using their heaver weight threads as well. This demonstration starts by showing my normal combination: 50wt thread and Sench Side Threading needles (www.amazon...
Cloudy Night Sky - Quilt Piecing Thread Selection
Просмотров 169Год назад
I am working on Cloudy Night Sky, a quilt I designed that I hope to have complete in time to submit for consideration to QuiltCon 2024. Because it is meant to be a show quilt, I am taking my time and carefully considering each step of the process. In this video, I will be working to select the thread I will use to piece the Kona Cotton Nightfall (deep navy) to Snow (off white). I am auditioning...

Thread Painting Iggy - Actual Speed
Просмотров 2352 года назад
My tagline, "Sewing at the Speed of Sound" may make you think that I am a very fast piecer and quilter. In fact, I often tell my students, that we ALL sew at the speed of sound, and sometimes it sounds faster than others. :) I'm sharing this actual speed video of me working on a thread painting to illustrate how important it is to listen to your machine and slow down when it is asking for it! Garden Peony Quilting Plan Timelapse
Просмотров 1672 года назад
A timelapse video created by Procreate as I sketched and mapped out my quilting plan for the Meringue Bonus Quilt / Garden Peony baby quilt. With a quilt top complete, that means it's time to come up with a quilting plan! I was stumped at first (you'll see a lot of initial thoughts from all over designs to different ways of thinking about the relationship of the elements of the quilt), but when...

A timelapse video created by Procreate as I sketched and mapped out my quilting plan for the Meringue baby quilt. With a quilt top complete, that means it's time to come up with a quilting plan, right? Curve Piecing Bias Evaluation
Просмотров 2602 года назад
I was cutting fabric to prepare to test out the Meringue quilt pattern, and I noticed that I could get a little bit creative and save some fabric if I cut drunkard's path concave templates differently than I normally recommend in a pattern. Well, one thing lead to another and I decided it was worth a side trip of effort to evaluate where the bias edges fall when piecing curves and the pros and ...
Recolor App for Digital Quilt Mockups {Tutorial}
Просмотров 8843 года назад
I have been looking for an option to allow quilters to be able to easily make digital quilt mockups of Quilting Jetgirl patterns. There are several great apps that are available, but most of the apps I have found require the designer to pay monthly fees in order to host their patterns on the site. And honestly, at this time, my pattern sales are do not currently justify those kind of recurring ...
Tips for Working with Directional Prints - Stitch and Flip and Two at a Time Half-Square Triangles

I love a good directional print (stripes or woodgrain prints are two of my favorites), but when it comes time to assembling a block, having a directional print rotated 90 degrees can be jarring. In this video, I share my top tips for keeping your directional prints running in the orientation that you want when you are doing stitch and flip or making two at a time half-square triangles. Color Blending in Adobe Illustrator with CMYK Color Theory Explanation
Просмотров 9113 года назад
This is a quick video demonstration of how to use Adobe Illustrator to blend between two colors. After creating a color blend, I then explain the color theory behind how the color blending is achieved by examining the CMYK values of the three colors: the blended color is the average of each of the CMYK values. Red CMYK (15, 100, 90, 10) Yellow CMYK (5, 0, 90, 0) Orange CMYK (10, 50, 90, 5) C = ...

Wow!!!!! Thank you!
You are very welcome.
Don't tell me that you quit ⁉️🌞
I create videos when I think I have something worth sharing. I've had some medical things come up this year and have not been quilting. I'm sure once the dust settles I'll be ready to quilt and that will lead to more content.
I like 😊 You and I understand , keep going ‼️
Thank you for the feedback 😊
Excellent video. Thanks.
My pleasure!
@@QuiltingJetgirl Yvonne - do you belong to the Modern Quilting Guild?
@@dudenaz I am an individual member of the Modern Quilt Guild.
Thanks for this. Why did you by-pass the 1/4 inch seam allowance when first cutting cutting out your shapes?
Great question. Think about making quarter circle blocks. When you piece them, you have to make unfinished blocks, so if you made 4 quarter circle blocks to make a full circle, each quarter circle would be 1/2" larger than the finished size, i.e. 6 1/2" unfinished and 6" finished to make a 12 1/2" unfinished or 12" finished full circle. Because we are making the full circle at once, then that extra 1/4" that is needed to sew quarter circles into a full block is not needed. I hope that helps clarify!
@@QuiltingJetgirl Ok. This explains it, thanks.
Quick and informative. Thanks.❤
My pleasure!
Really liked this 🎉
Thanks for letting me know!
Thank you. Always helpful.

Looks great!

Happy sewing!
This is a fab video. Thanks!
Thank you. Can not do much hand sewing anymore but like the idea of the seam ripper.
Isn't the seam ripper a smart idea? :)
This video is subscription worthy! 😅
Thank you! It's such a fun tip to know and use!
Great tips!! Thanks
My pleasure; happy quilting!
Thanks. Picked up some new ideas for burying threads. With the 12wt you used a 50wt bobbin thread, what did you use for the other two wts in the bobbin?
I'm glad I had a few new ideas for you to consider. For the other thread weights, I match the thread in the bobbin. So for 50wt, I wind my bobbins from the 50wt spool; for 40wt, I wind my bobbins from the 40wt spool; for 28wt, I wind my bobbins from the 28wt spool.
Thanks for working this out for us, much appreciated.
It was a fun "aha" moment when I figured it out, and I hope it works well for you, too. Happy quilting!
Such great information and tips!
Thank you. Happy quilting!
Fabulous information, thanks so much 🦋
My pleasure, glad it is helpful!
What weight thread are you using? Would a 60 or 80 weight thread make a difference? I hope your quilt makes it to QuiltCon 2024.
I piece with 50wt Aurifil cotton thread, as I have a big supply of that to work with. I'm working on the quilting now; we'll see if I can get it done in time to submit for consideration!
Cool!
I would use both colors. For example, if the white is on the bottom, the bobbin is white and the top thread is navy to match the navy. I always two color thread on high contrast combos
At the end of the video, I mention that I tried that as well. For this particular quilt and my sewing machine settings, the resulting seam looked more like the all white thread seam, so for me, it wasn't a good choice here. But that's why I absolutely encourage everyone to try things out and test out their machine settings and thread options. Knowing what works best with your setup is so empowering!
Very helpful,thanks!😻🐦
Thank you much ! I received exactly this tool and had no clue what to do with it. Now I know 👍
Yay! Happy quilting!
AWESOME!!!! Thanks for the tip!!!!

Very helpful. You are an excellent speaker! Very clear.
I'm so glad it was helpful!
Thank you Yvonne.
My pleasure!
Excellent video - as always, your narrative and process are clear and well thought out. Many thanks.
Thank you and happy quilting!
I tend to avoid directional prints; this tutorial may change that. I LOVE the way your brain works!
I'm so glad this might help you decide to work with directional prints. They might take a bit more consideration (and occasionally yardage) to keep going in the same direction, but I find that the results are well worth it!
THANK YOU!
You are so welcome. Happy quilting!
Thanks.
Thank you. Always helpful.
Curved piecing is a lot of fun, and it's good to know how the bias works and where it is placed as we sew.
Thanks.

You can do it! Don't forget to stop and take breaks to stretch and focus your eyes further away. <3

This was interesting. Not something I would try but I enjoyed watching. Was this you doing all the movement or an embroidery program?
This is me doing all of the movement. It is free motion quilting. You can read more about my process and the start of this project (which is currently still in work as of my reply on Thursday, September 1st), here: quiltingjetgirl.com/2022/08/29/gold-dust-day-gecko-thread-painting-part-1/
I do this same thing in PhotoShop and/or Illustrator when I'm quilting.
Fantastic and yes, when working on a computer, those programs work just like Procreate does on mobile devices! :)
I just came across you and your videos. I really enjoyed your videos and subscribed to your channel. I will start using my Hera Marker. Thank you.
I hope you find it to be a useful tool. Happy quilting!
Thanks. This was easy to follow. Scant 1/4 inch does not work for me so I make the squares another 1/4 inch bigger and trim down when I square up the completed block.
Thanks for this. I bought a template for this block and had come issues with extra fabric at the end. I'll go back and try your demo on scrap remnants to see if it was bias/straight of grain that is giving me a problem. I use quilting cotton. Also, what size needle and thread did you use? Would that make a difference?
Good question. I sew with 50wt Aurifil, which is a 2 ply 50wt thread. I also like to use 80/12 Schmetz needles for piecing. I don't particularly think that the needle/thread combination is why you might have extra fabric at the end. It's more likely that the raw edges of the fabrics were not fully aligned, which can lead to having extra fabric at the end. Definitely sew up some scraps, try things out, and look at how the raw edges are aligned prior to pressing the seam.
@@QuiltingJetgirl Thanks!

Thank you. I create videos and content as I am able.

Hi Yvonne. I have the same machine and hate the walking foot that came with it. I have talked with the company and they sent me another one that is the exact same, grrr. What are you using? Has a nice open toe! Is it Janome?
Hello Gayle. Yes, I purchased a Janome walking foot. It is the Janome Convertible Even Feed Foot Set for high shank model. It's not a perfect replacement; the top feed dogs on the Janome foot do not perfectly align with the feed dogs on my Juki (although I've had no issues as a result of the offset). Also, the needle is not centered in the center of the foot; it is closer to the right. I found mine on Amazon (this is a non-affiliate link): www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DQBUZUU
Thank you for this information
